The IJ, the port of Amsterdam, is filled with ships. The silhouette of the city can be seen in the background. Prominently in the picture is The Golden Lion, the flagship of Admiral Cornelis Tromp. Van de Velde painted his masterly port view in the year in which the warship was to be demolished, after years of loyal service to the city and fatherland.
