The Dutch ambassador on the way to Esfahan, Jan Baptist Weenix
In 1651-1652 Ambassador Joan Cunaeus and his secretary Cornelis Speelman travelled to Esfahan in Persia to stimulate the trade in horses and silk. Speelman described the tour, the luxurious receptions and visits to locations from antiquity. Both gentlemen are probably accompanied here by the sultan of Bandar Abbas. Cunaeus wears a silk robe, a gift from the shah.
