Seven kilometers from the last beach pavilion near Oosterend on the island of Terschelling stands on the beach a wooden house on legs: the famous "Drenkelingenhuisje". Exhausted drowning people used to take shelter there and by hoisting the bulb, they could let passers-by know they needed help.
In 1953, it was badly damaged. People refurbished it again but in the storm of Feb. 16, 1962, it was completely washed away.
It was completely rebuilt in 2000, complete with signal bulb and signpost.
Today, it is a destination for tough beach walkers. It can also be visited by covered wagon, beach bus or 4x4. The view there is great: sun, sea, beach, beautiful nature and lots of peace and quiet.
