About ‘Flowering tulips at the Dutch Keukenhof.’ by Wim van Gerven

Keukenhof is a world-famous flower park located on the estate of Keukenhof Castle. The estate originated in 1642 when a manor house was built. The Keukenhof has existed since 1949 and was designed on the northern part of the estate at the initiative of the then mayor of the nearby village of Lisse and a dozen important flower bulb growers from the area.

The Keukenhof covers 32 hectares and is open for eight weeks in spring. It is visited by more than a million tourists every year, more than 75 per cent of whom come from abroad, with more than seven million tulips blooming in all kinds of different forms, of which this photo is an example, crocuses, daffodils, hyacinths lilies and other bulbous plants. There are also guided tours, a boat trip on a whisper boat is possible and there are also several pavilions with cut and potted plants. Flower bulbs can be bought in two shops. When taking photos, it is difficult to choose: do I go for an overall picture or do I zoom in on part of this colourful splendour? This time I opted for the latter.
