The Colourful Breath of the Earth – Yellowstone

by Frank Schröter Photography

Turquoise-blue water and rising steam lie before a densely wooded slope. In the foreground, dark lines wind their way through bright orange and ochre-coloured mineral surfaces. Above the landscape, a clear blue sky, light-coloured clouds and a small daytime moon are visible. The expansive composition combines the delicate textures of the ground with the open expanse of water and the tranquil forest edge. The wooded slope slopes down to the left, opening up the view across the water. A low row of clouds runs along the forest edge. In the foreground, the mineral ridges meander in gently curving lines, leading into the depth of the picture. The cool turquoise of the water and the vibrant orange of the ground form the main areas of colour. The small moon remains visible as a tranquil detail in the upper left-hand corner of the sky.

The finished photograph was individually developed and retouched. It combines the fine textures of the mineral surfaces with the softer transitions in the mist and the dense forest edge. As a wall hanging, the composition offers both vibrant colours and a wealth of small details. Viewed from a greater distance, the contrast between the warm ground and the cool water stands out; up close, the lines and deposits in the foreground can be observed. The landscape format gives equal space to both the landscape and the open sky.
