The Aelbrechtskolk, built in 1389 to give the city of Delft a shipping connection with the river Maas. Around this water a prosperous little town called Delfshaven arose, first part of the city of Delft, later independent and since 1886 part of the city of Rotterdam.
Delfshaven is bursting with history. Prospered by fishing and whaling, it is also known for its gin distillery and as the birthplace of Dutch naval hero Piet Hein. Delfshaven was also the point of departure of some of the Pilgrims Fathers, who left from here via England to America, where they would become very influential.
