About ‘The "drenkelingenhuisje" on Terschelling at sunset’ by Raoul Baart

The drenkelingenhuisje on Terschelling at sunset.
The drenkelingenhuisje was once built to provide a safe haven for castaways, a high and dry shelter where they could wait for rescue. When the castaways raised the round ball-shaped cage, the inhabitants of Terschelling could see from afar that people in need of rescue were hiding in the house.

This image, and the other photos of the house in my portfolio that were taken on the same evening, were preceded by a brisk walking and cycling trip along the beach. With high tide (so only loose sand) and a strong head wind it took me 2 hours and 15 minutes of slogging to get here - and then back again in the dark but fortunately with the wind in my back.
