About ‘The Absinthe Drinker’ by Jeroen Quirijns

Absinthe is a spirit made from aniseed, wormwood and fennel, supplemented with various herbs, and first commercially produced by Henry-Louis Pernod in 1805. In the 19th century, it was particularly popular amongst artists, including van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Oscar Wilde, Manet and Degas, to name but a few.
Returning to the painting, absinthe is shrouded in an air of mystery due to its side effects and the intensity of its use: mania, delirium, psychosis; it was also said to be demonising. Knowing this only makes the painting all the more interesting: a woman sitting alone at a table, probably in a café, with a glass of absinthe in front of her and a bottle of sparkling water, presumably to dilute the alcohol.
With a sharp gaze, she keeps a close eye on the situation.
The woman almost seems to float off the canvas; her dark clothing stands out against the white foreground/tablecloth. The red walls create a stimulating environment; red has a low frequency with a long wavelength.
The painting in the background is distorted; the soda water bottle is askew, just like the glass.... I’m trying to emphasise the effect of absinthe even more this way.
A nice detail: the painting in the background is called ‘ "het pokerspel " ’ and I painted it sometime in mid-2000.
A trained eye will spot where I drew my inspiration from: Picasso’s ‘ "Blauwe Periode" ’ from the early 1900s

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
