The area consists mainly of pine forest that was planted on heathland in the early 19th century. This area was known as Seterse Heide. Around 1850, a lot of forest was cut down again, because the area was taken into use as a military training area. Sand drifts occurred, and the nearby hamlet of Seters even had to be protected from the encroaching sand by an oak fence. In 1899, the Forestry Commission took possession of the area. It was replanted and the soldiers left.
