Street in London

by Wim's Pastelart

In this cinematic and atmospheric dry pastel work, artist Wim Cuppens captures the pure, melancholic romance of a rainy day in the heart of London.

The painting is a masterful urban composition in which iconic British symbols blend with his characteristic, expressive colour vibrations and play of light.

The composition immediately draws the viewer out onto the rain-soaked streets. The absolute centrepiece of the work is the iconic, fiery-red telephone box, which stands out powerfully on the right-hand side. The deep scarlet red forms a stunning contrast with the predominantly monochrome, misty grey tones of the British capital. At the centre of the image, a solitary silhouette walks beneath a red umbrella, its reflection rendered beautifully fluid and glossy on the wet tarmac. In the background rise the monumental, recognisable contours of the Elizabeth Tower (Big Ben), shrouded in a mysterious, atmospheric mist.

Here, Cuppens once again demonstrates his mastery of the layered technique: the warm, golden-yellow glow of the historic street lamps is beautifully reflected in the puddles, whilst on the right-hand side, explosive, fiery orange and red autumnal hues break through the mist. This bold explosion of colour infuses the otherwise rather chilly urban setting with a warm, vibrant and dynamic energy.

This masterpiece strikes a perfect balance between graphic realism and contemporary impressionism. It exudes the nostalgic atmosphere of a metropolis in autumn. It is a luxurious and characterful statement piece that brings an air of urban elegance, depth and artistic refinement to any modern residential interior or high-end office.
