Kingfisher

by Wim's Pastelart

In this vibrant and sparkling dry pastel work, artist Wim Cuppens captures the dazzling beauty and fierce vitality of one of the most beloved native birds: the kingfisher. The painting is a magnificent example from his wildlife collection, in which he combines the fragility of nature with his recognisable, dynamic play of colour.

The composition presents an intimate and alert portrait of the bird, perched on a delicate wooden branch. The kingfisher is known as a ‘ 'vliegend juweel' door het water te schieten, en dat juweelachtige karakter komt hier dankzij Cuppens' ’ Expressive Neon Realism comes into its own here.

The plumage on its back and head bursts into a layered palette of electric blue, turquoise and bright sky blue. By placing bright, almost luminous neon accents amongst the deeper shadows, the artist masterfully brings the iridescent, glossy texture of the feathers to life. The warm, rust-orange breast forms a beautiful, complementary contrast to the blue and radiates pure warmth.

The background is built up from expressive, painterly brushstrokes in deep jade and emerald green shades. This tranquil yet texturally rich background does not absorb the viewer’s gaze, but rather pushes the kingfisher powerfully and three-dimensionally into the foreground. The sharp, alert beak and the sparkling, dark gaze lend the little bird a wonderful alertness and character.

This masterpiece strikes a perfect balance between fine naturalistic detail and modern impressionism. It brings a lively, fresh energy and an air of artistic refinement to any modern or country-style interior.
