Stadholder Prince Maurice on his ostentatious bed, Adriaen Pietersz. van de Venne, c. 1625.
On 23 April 1625 Prince Maurits died at the age of 57. There were rumors that he was poisoned. Section, however, showed that Maurice had died of a liver abscess. Shortly afterwards the body was embalmed and laid out, dressed in a tabard lined with fur, as can be seen in this little portrait. The funeral took place in Delft on 20 September.
