The Werk aan de Groeneweg, an fortification built in the interbellum between the two world wars to reinforce the outdated Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie at this location with bunkers and trenches. Constructed for war, now a beautiful and peaceful location, especially on a beautiful spring morning like this one.
With morning mist, blossom on the old fruit trees, flowering rapeseed and whitethroat, and the un-Dutch hilly terrain due to the old trenches and earthen ramparts, this was again (I had been there last year as well) a great morning to walk around here. The photo was taken just after sunrise, with the orange glow of the rising sun warmly illuminating the mist. In the foreground, a preserved and partly restored trench daring back to the late 1930's.
