Snowdrops are bulbous plants that prefer lime- and humus-rich soil in semi-shade.
The two 4-8 mm wide leaves are blue-green in Galanthus nivalis, bright green in other species such as Galanthus woronowii. Galanthus cilicicus and Galanthus peshmenii, two species from southern Turkey, often have more leaves.
The single, milky-white flowers, which bud from a membranous inflorescence, are raised above the leaves on a 15-25 cm stem. They consist of six free tepals (petals):
three outer milky-white, inverted ovoid to rectangular tepals with rounded tips;
three inner, much shorter tepals, which are edged with one or two green honey marks. They have a projecting apex, except in Galanthus patyphyllus and Galanthus krasnovii, two species from the Caucasus.
