Blue Hydrangea low key.
The large hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) is a plant in the hydrangea family (Hydrangeaceae).
The deciduous shrub can reach a height of 1-3 m. The flowers are pink, red, purple, white or blue depending on the pH (acidity) of the soil: in acid soils the flowers turn blue, in alkaline soils pink and in pH-neutral soils purple. White varieties do not change colour.[1]
The large hydrangea has been used as an ornamental plant in Japan for at least 150 years as well as in many other areas of the world with temperate climates. Over the years, over 600 cultivars with different colours have been developed for the garden. To give the flowers the desired colour, garden owners often add calcium oxide (lime) or aluminium sulphate to the soil to change the acidity of the soil around the plant.
The large hydrangea grows best in loose, rich, wet but well-drained soils in semi-shade. The plant flowers from July to October.
