Nicolaes Maes (Dordrecht, January 1634 - Amsterdam, buried 24 December 1693) was a Northern Dutch painter from the Golden Age.
He was one of Rembrandt's most original pupils and was praised for his virtuosity. At the beginning of his career, he painted biblical scenes and genre paintings, which influenced Pieter de Hooch and Johannes Vermeer. From 1660 onwards, he worked almost exclusively as a portraitist, first in Dordrecht and later in Amsterdam. He left an extensive oeuvre.
