Taken on Conradkade in The Hague, near the bridge at Weimarstraat, this photograph shows a tranquil cityscape in which history, architecture and everyday life come together. The Hague canal meanders peacefully through the neighbourhood and has been an important part of the urban expansion towards the Regentesse and Valkenboskwartier districts since the end of the 19th century. The quay was constructed during a period in which The Hague was developing into a modern city, with wide streets, waterways and stately residential blocks.
The characteristic buildings along Conradkade reflect that era: long rows of façades with brick details, rhythmic window divisions and a clear urban order. The bridge at Weimarstraat serves as a connecting element here, both literally and visually. It marks a transition between neighbourhoods and forms a recognisable point in the streetscape. The classic lantern, the wrought-iron bridge railing and the bicycle at the water's edge reinforce the typically Dutch character of this place.
The subdued colour scheme and soft light give the photo an almost timeless feel. It is a The Hague that does not impose itself, but slowly reveals itself: quiet, urban and slightly melancholic. It is precisely this atmosphere that makes the image suitable as wall decoration for those who love city photography with a story. The work fits perfectly into an interior where architecture, history and a subtle urban atmosphere come together.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
