About the artwork

Description:

In Schaduw over de Handboogstraat, Torrentius captures a moment when time seems to stand still. The narrow Amsterdam street is bathed in a soft glow of afternoon light, in which the sun gently spreads its fingers over the centuries-old facades. The stones, once cold and indifferent, now light up in warm hues of amber and copper. In the middle of the street, a shadow runs like a river of silence, flowing between the walls, while a forgotten puddle of rain reflects the light like a small eye still watching over what was. The street is empty - no human disturbs the interplay of light and stone - and this is precisely why the image gains its intensity. Everything breathes memory: the lanterns, the crooked pavements, the small doors that once opened lives.

Vision of Torrentius:

Torrentius is not looking for the city in this photograph, but its echo. He sees the Handboogstraat as a transitional space between past and present, where the hubbub of modern times is momentarily hushed. In the light that caresses the facades, he recognises the breath of old Amsterdam - a city that is still alive in its bricks, but has long since outgrown its inhabitants. His play with light and shadow is no coincidence, but a meditative gesture: the light symbolises memory, the shadow oblivion. In that field of tension, Torrentius finds beauty - a melancholic peace between what remains and what slowly disappears.
