About ‘Senegal; Gorée; View of Eternity’ by Dirk Lahuis

Introduction: Gorée's location, surrounded by the endless Atlantic Ocean, was once its curse. The water that now laps the island with a soothing rhythm was for centuries the way to a life of exile. The island acts as an 'memorial' in the open, with the sea being the eternal witness to the millions of souls who were carried off from these shores.

This photo was taken from the gallery behind the private quarters of the Slave House. We look out over the ocean, a view that at first glance seems idyllic but is laden with a deep sadness. This is the sea that has brought so many people, but more importantly has taken and taken so many. Nearby is the 'Door of No Return' the gate through which enslaved people were forced onto the ship, away from their homeland, never to return. The openness of the gallery and the blue of the water symbolise a freedom that was brutally taken away at the time. The sea here is not mere water; it is a mass grave and a route of tears. The photograph captures that paradox: the breathtaking beauty of the horizon versus the gruesome finality that this same horizon once represented.

Later, I could afford a new camera, and it became a Pentax K1000. I dreamed of a Contax, a Canon AE-1 or a Hasselblad, but those were out of my reach.
