About ‘Morning ritual of a Free Spirit’ by Dirk Lahuis

The tall, narrow space of the toilet exudes the stately atmosphere of an early-century mansion. Against the backdrop of cool tiles and classical elements sits a woman who embodies the zeitgeist of the 1960s: blonde, free-spirited and confident. She is completely naked, a paragon of comfort in her own skin as she sits relaxed on the glasses.

In her hands, she holds current affairs. A recent newspaper, folded tightly, forms a paper barrier over her breasts. Her gaze is focused, fully absorbed in the headlines and columns describing the world outside these walls. It is a powerful, almost cinematic image: the naked human arming herself with knowledge and news in an intimate space.

The atmosphere has integrity and is filled with a quiet romanticism. What matters here is not the revelation, but the obviousness of the moment. There is a subtle tension in the air, created by the contrast between the functional, antique space and the modern, intellectual woman immersed there, stripped of clothing but not dignity. It is a portrait of pure autonomy in a hidden corner of the house.

Later, I could afford a new camera, and it became a Pentax K1000. I dreamed of a Contax, a Canon AE-1 or a Hasselblad, but those were out of my reach.
