About "Scottish Highlanders enjoying the shade"

About the artwork

A group of imposing Scottish Highlanders rest under the broad crown of an ancient oak tree in Hageven. The animals seek cooling shade, while the gentle rustle of leaves and birdsong fill the silence. In front, a beautiful, red-brown Highlander lies calmly in the grass, while the rest of the herd - dark in colour - remain standing or lying gingerly behind him. Their long coats and stately posture give the landscape an almost timeless look, as if nature here follows its own rhythm, detached from the hustle and bustle of the world.

The Hageven, a unique nature reserve on the border of Belgium and the Netherlands, provides the perfect backdrop for this scene. Vast grasslands, wet heaths and meandering watercourses make this area a paradise for plants, animals and nature lovers alike. The Highlanders not only provide a beautiful sight here, but also play an important role in managing nature: by grazing, they keep the landscape open and varied.

This image, made during a walk in the Hageven, shows how man and nature meet. It is a reminder of the peace and beauty hidden in the landscape, and an invitation to pause more often to contemplate the small but meaningful moments in nature.
