Saul at the Witch of Endor, Jacob Cornelisz. of Oostsanen, 1526.
Fearful of the outcome of a battle, Saul, king of the Israelites, consulted the divine witch of Endor. The prophecy came true: Saul lost the battle but shortly before he was to be killed, the king threw himself into his sword. His suicide - middle back - is a warning against witchcraft. A witch's sabbath takes place at the front: in a chalk circle sits the fortune teller, surrounded by other witches, satyrs and fantasy figures.
