Between 1875 and 1914, the basilica was built to commemorate the more than 50,000 casualties of the Franco-German war. The Franco-German war took place between 1870 and 1871. The original architect of the white basilica was Paul Abadie, he died in 1884 and never saw the white basilica completed. The construction of the Sacré-Coeur was extremely difficult, especially the laying of the foundations was a huge job. Installing the 19-tonne swinging bell (one of the heaviest bells in the world) also proved to be quite a challenge. Travertine, a French limestone that produces a white layer of chalk when it rains, was used to build the Sacré-Coeur. This type of stone provides the beautiful white colour of the basilica.
I love visiting the quiet and high-altitude Montmartre district with its picturesque streets and squares.
