Reclining boy, Gerbrand van den Eeckhout, 1653 - 1657
brush tip and brown ink, with brush and brown ink; framing lines in dark brown ink, h 198mm × b 307mm More object information
Van den Eeckhout was a pupil of Rembrandt between 1635 and 1641. He continued to follow his style of drawing for a long time. He also used the brush to make a fascinating group of figure studies, of which this loosely depicted boy is one of the most beautiful examples. Drawings like this were undoubtedly the type of work he liked most. At the time, artists compared working for publishers with the work of a galley slave.
