About "Rainbow in a circular arc around the world"

by Andre Wilkens

About the artwork

A rainbow takes its name from its appearance when it rains, but a rainbow can also be seen in a cloud of water droplets from a waterfall, garden hose or fountain and sometimes above the surf in the sea. From a plane or from a mountain peak, a rainbow can be visible as a circle when no horizon is in the way. The light is reflected and refracted into a spectrum of the primary colours, which blend together. ...
As seen from the observer, the centre of the arc is directly opposite the sun, and is therefore always below the horizon. Observer and arc together form an imaginary cone with the observer at the tip of the cone and the rainbow along the arc edge of the base of the cone
The universe surprises us when the sun shines and it rains at the same time. The World surprises us with this wonderfully clean display of colours. Nature gives and takes. Think of climate change . Floods and forest fires in different places. Heat is increasing. Will the rainbow continue to cheer us?
According to folklore, there is a pot of gold at the beginning and end of the rainbow. In Irish folklore, the pots of gold are guarded by a leprechaun. However, the beginning or end of the rainbow is unreachable because the rainbow moves with the observer.
