Portraits of three governesses of the leper house in Amsterdam, Ferdinand Bol, c. 1668 oil on canvas, h 170cm × w 208cm. Originally, the leper house housed leprosy patients. Since the contagious disease was rare in the 17th century, people with other diseases were cared for there from then on. Three governesses ran the household: from supervising the servants to purchasing goods. Bol painted them at a table against an empty back wall. Their identities are revealed by the family coats of arms on the mantel below the canvas.
