Portrait of the Himalayas: The Wisdom of Lamayuru. High up in the breathtaking mountains of Ladakh, on the impressive route from Srinagar to Leh, lies the ancient and picturesque monastery of Lamayuru. Travelling at these immense altitudes in the Himalayas pushes your body to its limits. The thin air and lack of oxygen caused a nagging headache, but the urge to capture the unique atmosphere of this remote world overcame the physical discomforts. A descent to the monastery proved unavoidable; after all, you have to make some sacrifices to bring home some extraordinary images. On arrival, however, the headache I’d been suffering from was instantly forgotten and more than compensated for. It was not only the imposing landscape and the monastery’s architecture that made an impression, but above all the wonderful, warm-hearted people who lived there. This powerful portrait captures the soul of a remarkable resident at Lamayuru Monastery. Every wrinkle on the face tells its own story of life at high altitude, of survival amidst the harsh elements of nature, and of the serenity of Buddhist culture. The authentic clothing, the distinctive headdress and the traditional necklaces make this image a timeless testament to human dignity and tranquillity. This photograph was originally captured in 1988 on analogue film. It has recently been digitised with the utmost precision, beautifully preserving the unique, warm character, the fine texture and the nostalgic atmosphere of analogue photography. With this piece, you are not simply bringing home a piece of wall art, but a special slice of travel history and an expressive portrait full of character, warm tones and human connection. Ideal for an interior where authenticity, global cultures and narrative art take centre stage.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
