Portrait of William II, king of the Netherlands, Jan Adam Kruseman, 1839 oil on canvas, h 109.5cm × w 86cm.
This is a portrait of King William II in military uniform. It is an informal portrait. He stands nonchalantly with his hunting dog in the dunes, which were considered the quintessential Dutch landscape in Romanticism. In 1848 - when revolutions were raging everywhere in Europe - William II abdicated his absolute power. The Netherlands then became a parliamentary democracy.
