As a photographer, I want my images to capture not only the beauty of nature, but also the characteristic details that make an animal unique. In this portrait of two Konik horses, I was face to face with their calm but powerful appearance. The horses showed themselves as they are: pure, honest and unadorned. That is precisely what makes capturing these animals so special.
The Konik is a primeval horse that originated in Eastern Europe and now lives in many nature reserves in the Netherlands and abroad. Their robust build, subdued colours and calm presence give them a timeless beauty. In this shot, the shapes and lines of their bodies stand out beautifully, enhanced by the dark background that puts all the attention on the animals themselves.
To me, this portrait feels like a meeting: two animals sharing their gaze with the viewer, each with its own character yet together a unity. It is an image that invites silence and reflection, and at the same time highlights the power of nature and the connection between animals.
