Atalanta in all its splendour | A butterfly on a thistle in the Dutch countryside

by Jan Jansen Natuurfotografie

Sometimes a special moment lasts just a few seconds. This red admiral sat still for just long enough to spread its wings fully and reveal its distinctive colours. The deep black, the bright orange bands and the crisp white accents combine to form a stunning contrast against the soft green background. It is precisely this simplicity that makes this photograph so powerful.

Whilst taking the photograph, the tranquillity was particularly striking. The butterfly sat relaxed on a flowering thistle, whilst the background slowly faded into soft shades of green. By using a shallow depth of field, all attention naturally falls on the red admiral. The thistle provides a natural backdrop without cluttering the image, giving the butterfly plenty of space to shine.

The red admiral is one of the best-known and most beloved butterflies in the Netherlands. From spring until well into autumn, it can regularly be seen in gardens, nature reserves and flower-filled verges. Its striking wing markings make it instantly recognisable and a favourite among nature lovers and photographers.

This photograph brings the tranquillity and beauty of a summer’s day in the countryside into your home. Thanks to the soft background and the butterfly’s vibrant colours, the image suits both modern and rustic interiors. A stylish wall decoration for anyone who enjoys butterflies, flowers and the little wonders of Dutch nature.
