Portrait of Jan Nieuwenhuyzen, Adriaan de Lelie, 1780 - 1806
Jan Nieuwenhuyzen was a bookseller, printer and Mennonite minister. Together with some kindred spirits he founded the Maatschappij tot Nut van 't Algemeen in 1784. The aim of this society was to raise the spiritual and moral level of the bourgeoisie. Society mainly contributed to the improvement of popular education.
