Portrait of Jacob Cornelisz van Oostsanen, Jacob Cornelisz. van Oostsanen (studio of), ca. 1533
For a long time this work was regarded as the earliest known self-portrait in Northern Netherlandish painting, but it was probably made after a lost work of art. Such portraits illustrate the growing status of artists. Jacob Cornelisz looks directly at us. Behind him hangs a piece of paper with the year 1533 and his monogram: I W (reversed) v A ('J[acob] W[ar] v[an] A[msterdam]').
