Peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus)
The peregrine is our largest native falcon and is often referred to as 'the fastest bird in the world'. When the peregrine falls from very high on a prey, it can reach 389 km per hour. Of course, this is not an active flight, it is actually 'falling fast', because its aerodynamic construction and posture offer little resistance to falling.
