In the historic heart of Berlin lies the charming Nikolaiviertel, a neighbourhood where the city’s past is still tangibly present. This photograph captures a moment of tranquillity in an area that visitors usually discover as one of the oldest parts of the German capital.
On the left, the brick church dominates the scene, with its sturdy walls and tall windows evoking the neighbourhood’s medieval origins. The warm tones of the brickwork contrast subtly with the cool air of a clear day. The bare branches of the trees stand out as fine lines against the sky, giving the scene an almost graphic structure.
In the centre of the small square stands a statue that reinforces the tranquil character of the place. It forms a quiet focal point, surrounded by benches, a narrow path and a modest patch of greenery. The buildings on the right display a mix of historic façades and carefully restored properties that bring the atmosphere of old Berlin back to life.
The soft light sweeping across the façades subtly highlights the details of windows, rooflines and plasterwork. This creates a harmony between architecture, nature and space. It is precisely the kind of moment when a city seems to stand still for a moment.
This photograph captures the atmosphere of a hidden corner of Berlin: a place where history, tranquillity and architecture converge. Ideal for lovers of European cities, historic architecture and atmospheric urban photography.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
