Pastrami Sandwich at Katz’s Deli – New York City by Yahya Algehaili

A classic pastrami sandwich at Katz’s Delicatessen in New York City takes centre stage in this photograph. Thick layers of warm, juicy pastrami are piled between two simple slices of bread, exactly as you would expect from a traditional New York deli. The coarse texture of the meat, dark charred edges and soft bread make the sandwich feel almost tangible. In the background, the kitchen, staff and tip containers dissolve into a busy but unmistakably deli-like setting.

Katz’s is one of those places where food and city culture seem inseparable. The sandwich is not delicate or carefully styled; its appeal lies in abundance, simplicity and character. For me, that directness feels completely at home in New York. While everything behind the counter moves quickly, the sandwich sits still for a brief moment at the centre of the activity.

What I like about this photograph is that it works as more than food photography. It captures a specific place, tradition and style of eating. The shallow depth of field keeps all attention on the pastrami, while the blurred background provides just enough context to suggest the energy of the deli.

As wall art, the image is a bold choice for lovers of New York, American food culture and classic delicatessens.
