About the artwork

View from the Batavian Embassy of the Palais des Tuileries. The Tuileries Palace or simply the Tuileries (French Palais des Tuileries or les Tuileries), was a palace in Paris on the right bank of the Seine that existed from the 16th to the 19th centuries and was the residence of kings and heads of state on several occasions. It was the largest palace complex in Europe.

Rutger Jan Schimmelpenninck, the Dutch ambassador in Paris, commissioned Knip to make a series of paintings of the Batavian embassy, the Hôtel de Beauharnais. This is the view from the embassy, looking towards the Palais des Tuileries. An optical telegraph can be seen at the top right on a pointed roof, while another can be seen at the far right on Montmartre. This made contact between Paris and the Netherlands possible.

Josephus Augustus Knip (Tilburg, 3 August 1777 - Berlicum, 1 October 1847) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist whose work can be found in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, among other places. Knip was born the son of Nicolaas Frederik Knip. The artist was a landscape painter of mainly rocky landscapes. He travelled extensively and was influenced internationally, particularly by French classicism. In 1801 he left for Paris. In 1808 he won the Prix de Rome and from 1809 onwards he lived in Italy.
