Amsterdam is internationally known for its Red Light District, with the main canal being the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. With the Oude Kerk prominent in this part of the canal and unique canal houses, this is one of the oldest parts of Amsterdam. Construction of the church started in 1250 and its consecration was in 1306.
The Old Church was built in the Dutch Gothic style. Due to the primitive piling techniques used at the time, the construction had to be light. To save weight, the church has pointed arch windows and barrel vaults, which saved on wall work. In this way, a large and complicated church building could still be made.
