I made this dramatic image on Christmas Day 2020, in full lockdown. We had nowhere to go, but travel at home was allowed. Since it was raining in my hometown of Brussels, I decided to travel to the cusp to capture changeable and stormy weather. I spent a full day actively photographing on the seawall and breakwater of Ostend, "the Queen of the seaside towns".
Around noon the sky became so dramatic after a rainstorm that it became photographically very interesting to capture it.
The sun trying to break through, the reflections of silhouettes in the rain puddles on the breakwater and the skyline of Ostend.
The image appears to be black and white, but it is not. Nor is this a duotone; for a moment it really was. What a storm can bring about on a winter's day. Dramatics as we often come across in the Belgian arts.
