The white-eared owl measures around 24 centimetres. The male weighs between 185 and 240 grams and the female between 225 and 275 grams. The bird has a short tail and distinctive ear tufts.
The color of the eyes varies from red to yellow-orange.
The owl is predominantly white on the underside and becomes soft grey with darker shades towards the top. Two lines of white dots run across the back. The white face is framed by strongly outlined black feathers. The colour of the eyes varies between orange-yellow and red. Adult males and females are almost identical. The juvenile is browner and has a gray-brown face.
The northern long-eared owl sounds a modest "po-prooo" with the emphasis on the second syllable.
