Nooning on the Platte, Albert Bierstadt (1859)
Albert Bierstadt is best known for his dramatic scenes of the Western landscape, but he also made more intimate sketches that capture the expansive grandeur of the Rocky Mountains with equal power. He painted Nooning on the Platte in 1859 after joining a survey party bound for the Rocky Mountains. Artists like Bierstadt wanted their largely Eastern clientele to know they had actually seen the landscapes they painted.
