The Mute Swan is the most common swan in Germany. It breeds on all types of water and is relatively unaffected by disturbances. Many Central European populations originate from park and ornamental birds kept from the 16th century onwards. In the breeding area it is often aggressive towards humans or other swans if approached too closely. Its most striking feature is the large, black bump above the bill. The Mute Swan is the largest native water bird and grows to 125 to 160 cm in length. Females weigh between 6.6 and 12 kilograms. Males can weigh up to 15 kg. This makes the mute swan one of the heaviest birds capable of flight.
