The Canigó (French: Canigou) rises 2,784 metres into the sky on the border between France and Spain and offers magnificent views from its summit across the Roussillon plain to the Mediterranean beaches. Today a border mountain, the easternmost high alpine peak of the Pyrenees once lay in the heart of Catalonia. And it is still deeply rooted there today. It is the source of identity for the Catalans - and a marvellous hiking area. At the Marialles refuge, hikers set off on routes that lead up to its summit - revealing this view at the height of the mountain pastures.
