St Laurense Weihoek is the top area for meadow birds on Walcheren. This unique area attracts a great diversity of birds. Walk or cycle along the area and enjoy all the bird sounds. As the birds are used to passers-by, they allow themselves to be studied up close. During the breeding season, you can regularly see chicks of lapwings, redshanks and black-tailed godwits. This old-land area, where clay lies on peat, is originally very low. Marsification (the excavation of salt-soaked peat) and subsidence due to drainage caused further lowering of the area after the Middle Ages. As a result, the pastures have always remained too wet for agriculture. Despite land consolidation, this area has always remained a wet meadow bird area.
