Maurice Utrillo, Utrillo's wine (the bottle and the glasses), 1924 by Atelier Liesjes

A rare and intimate still life in which Utrillo focuses his attention on glassware and a bottle of wine - an image of ordinariness, reflection and painterly subtlety.

🎨 What you see
A tall bottle and three drinking glasses, carefully arranged on a warm-toned background.

In the background, a branch with leaves, forming an organic contrast with the glassware.

The colours are muted but rich: blue, green, brown and black - with subtle shades evoking depth and luminosity.

The brushwork is delicate and layered, emphasising transparency, reflection and texture.

🧩 Theme
Here, Utrillo presents still life as a moment of rest and observation - a visual pause in his usually urban oeuvre.

The bottle and glasses possibly refer to his personal struggle with alcohol, but also to conviviality and introspection.

In 1924, during a period of relative stability, this work is an image of inner order and painterly control.

📍 Style and technique
Different from his cityscapes, but with the same austere clarity and rhythmic composition.

The brushwork is tactile and atmospheric, with an almost graphic approach to shape and shadow.

The composition is centred and balanced, with a sacred calm reminiscent of Morandi - but with Utrillo's own emotional undertones.

Maurice Utrillo (26 December 1883 - 5 November 1955) was a painter from France, born in Paris, lived in Montmartre and died in Dax. The artist worked mainly with Sober colours: Many greys, whites, ochres and browns - often with melancholic undertones. Furthermore, he worked with simplified forms: No theatrical perspectives or dramatic lighting, but a quiet, almost naive approach. His style was Post-impressionist.
