About ‘Masai on the red road, Tanzania’ by Dante van Rijn

A dirt track winds through the Tanzanian landscape whilst a group of Maasai walk in the distance. The red earth of the path stands out sharply against the dry grass, which takes on a golden hue in the midday light. In the background, a mountain looms hazily through the morning mist, giving the scene the appearance of a painting.

What struck me at the moment I took this photo was its ordinariness. For the people on this road, this was simply their route, their daily life. The bright colours of their clothes, the red and blue, stand out in an almost natural way against the rugged landscape around them. No posing, no moment for the camera. Just people on the move.

This image was taken during my journey through Tanzania, a country that has touched me in a way I find hard to describe. It is the combination of space, light and human presence that makes this continent so unique. With this image, I want to convey precisely that feeling: the vast expanse of Africa, and at the same time the human scale within it.

In an interior, this image serves as a point of calm. The warm earth tones, the gold of the grass and the soft light suit a natural or bohemian interior. For anyone who has ever been to Africa, it immediately brings back memories. For those who have never been there, it arouses curiosity.
