Maria Stuart as widow of William II, Bartholomeus van der Helst, 1652 White is the colour of mourning for those of royal descent. When Maria Stuart was 19, she was already widowed. Her husband, stadholder William II, died of smallpox in 1650. Two years later, she had herself portrayed like this, holding an orange in her hand as a reference to the House of Orange. On the left, the stadholder's gate of the Binnenhof overlooking The Hague.
