Madonna in a wreath of flowers
Daniel Seghers, Cornelis Schut
The formula of a Madonna in a wreath of flowers was introduced in Flemish painting by Jan Brueghel I and Peter Paul Rubens. After Breughel, the Jesuit Daniel Seghers was undoubtedly the most important flower painter in the Southern Netherlands. The father-artist kept a written list of 239 pieces painted by himself. Several of these were ordered as diplomatic gifts. Seghers realized the painting shown here in collaboration with the history painter Cornelis Schut I, who is best known for his large-scale, sumptuous compositions.
