Maasvlakte 2 (also popularly known as Maasvlakte 2) is the name for the Rotterdam port expansion project located to the west of the (first) Maasvlakte. This new sea-based area of 2,000 hectares increased the size of the port by 20%. Upon completion of the expansion, the Rotterdam ports will cover a total of 12,000 hectares. On 1 September 2008, after years of plans, discussions and protests, construction began. On 22 May 2013, Maasvlakte 2 was officially inaugurated.
The new port area was built in phases on behalf of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. Maasvlakte 2 connects directly to the previously constructed Maasvlakte. Of the total area, half, 1,000 hectares, is earmarked for port-related activity. The remaining space is needed for infrastructure (290 hectares), seawalls (230 hectares) and waterways/port basins (510 hectares). Maasvlakte 2 is particularly intended to facilitate chemical and container transhipment companies. The new ports have a draught of 20 metres, making them accessible to the latest generation of large container ships.
