'Losing to the Façade': an abstract Cubist painting about self-reflection by Dirk van der Ven

This geometric artwork invites self-reflection and poses the probing question: are you truly who you want to be, or are you in danger of losing yourself to superficiality?

The image depicts faces disappearing behind colourful shapes. They resemble masks from some sort of festive masquerade. But behind the bright exterior lies a subdued reality. An all-too-familiar contradiction: the figures present a cheerful face to the world, whilst their abstract gazes reveal that they are losing themselves.

The painting employs a stark contrast between dark and light shades. Deep blue and purple areas alternate with bright ochre yellow, warm red and grass green. Thick, dark contour lines sharply separate the colours from one another. This ensures that the light-coloured areas clearly stand out. Furthermore, this choice of colour heightens the psychological tension; the cool background colours exude a chilling melancholy, whilst the bright accents, by contrast, leave an energetic and cheerful impression.

The clean, angular lines give the composition a modern and structured character. Visible digital brushstrokes with a brush effect highlight the contemporary technique used in the work. This colourful image immediately catches the eye and is sure to spark a lovely conversation. Why not hang it in the dining room or the living room, for example? Moreover, thanks to its striking character and deeper psychological layer, this expressive artwork is ideally suited to a waiting room, foyer or hotel lobby.
