The lora (Amazona barbadensis rothchildi) is a familiar sight on Bonaire. The colour combination of green with a yellow head is a combination found only in Bonaire. The birds usually perch in trees to avoid the sun.
These parrots were initially loathed, especially during the dry periods when they visited the plantations and devoured the mango's, papaya's and other fruits. Later, their natural habitat was reduced and the population declined sharply by selling the young parrots, although this is prohibited by law.
 	 	 
Biologists are trying to encourage the growth of trees and shrubs that are important for the lora's. Good progress has now been made. Biologists are working with Washington / Slagbaai National Park management to prevent the extinction of the Bonaire parrot.
